The sea level has risen and fallen throughout the centuries depending on how much of the Earth’s water was trapped in ice. During the so called Ice Ages sea levels were lower and more land was exposed. Furthermore the oceans have not always had their current configuration. Millenia ago the continents were all connected in a giant land mass known as Pangaea. At that time all the oceans were also all connected in one big mass, but due to continental drift new water bodies have been formed.
