Genearlly, coral reefs are considered one of the most biologically diverse marine ecosystems. They cover less than 1% of the area of the ocean, but contain about 25% of known marine species—this is why they are sometimes referred to as the “rainforests of the ocean.” There are many coral reefs throughout the ocean, but the largest is the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Australia.
