The world’s largest artificial reef was created by the purposeful sinking of the USS Oriskany off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, in 2006.
The largest man-made reef was created when the USS Oriskany was intentionally sunk 24 miles off Pensacola Beach in the Gulf of Mexico. The ship is 888 feet long and cost the US Navy $20 million to sink. The ship had to be stripped of a number of environmental hazards before the EPA would sign off on the plan.
