The largest oil field on earth is the Ghawar Field, located in east-central Saudi Arabia near the city of Dharan. It was discovered in 1948 and has produced more than 60 billion barrels of oil since that time. Ghawar alone accounts for 6.25% of the world’s daily production of oil. Saudi Aramco, the company that extracts most of the oil from this field, estimates there are about 71 billion barrels of oil remaining that are recoverable by today’s technology. Ghawar also produces natural gas.
