Gold is mined all over the world, but most heavily in South Africa, China, the United States, Peru, Australia, and Russia. The effect on the environment depends on the type of mine – gold can be panned from rivers, for instance, which has minimal environmental impact; open-pit mining, on the other hand, produces some nasty acidic byproducts and leaves the area completely desolate for potentially thousands of years.
