The word “germ” stems from the Latin root “germen”- this also gave us the word germinate. The word “germ” first appeared in  the 17th century with connections to the words “sprout” and “seed”.

Germ is a shortening of a root word used in Latin first, then later in French and German, “germen”.  Also related is the root “gen,” meaning sprout, bud, or to bear.  Other words like germinate and genus are closely related to the word germ.
