Tap water comes from either lakes and rivers (also referred to as surface water) or from wells (groundwater). Most people in the United States get their tap water from groundwater.
The water you get from your sink, shower, and tap comes first from fresh water sources (lakes, rivers, springs, and underground). Since most of these sources are far from most major populated areas, water must be pumped through pipe system across many miles to the filtration plant. In the filtration plant, the water is purified from contaminants and minerals are added for our benefit; that is largely why water tastes the way it does. From the plant, water is pumped to your home through a complex piping system, and comes out when you turn the handle.
