Pepper is a plant that originated in India. It grows on climbing vines with very large, broad green leaves and white flowers that grow on spikes. Peppercorn is the fruit of the pepper plant. The fruit around the seed shrinks and darkens as it’s dried, forming black pepper that we use as spice for food.
Pepper has a long history in the culinary traditions of most cultures, but it is originally from India. It has since spread to elsewhere throughout the world, and peppercorns were traded as currency at one point. During the Middle Ages, it was a luxury used primarily by the wealthy. India still produces about half of the pepper used in the world, but in the 20th century Thailand, Vietnam, and China began to grow peppercorn on their plantations as well.
