Ozone gas occurs both at ground level and in the stratosphere. Ground level ozone “bad ozone” is a pollutant that is at ground level that can cause significant health risks. Bad ozone is the main component of smog.
Good ozone exists in the stratosphere 6 to 30 miles from the earth’s surface. This layer protects the earth from harmful UV rays. It is at this level that ozone depletion occurs. As the ozone deteriorates the cloud of ozone gas disperses allowing more UV rays to pass and hit the earth.
