The last garbage dump in New York City, Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island, closed at the end of 2001 after being pressed to deal with the debris from 9/11. Without a place in-city to send the 13,000 tons of waste it generates each day New York City has a 20 year plan to export its trash out of state, at a cost of approximately $400 million a year.
