Where does most carbon in China come from?

Burning coal for electricity is the largest source of carbon emissions in China – and in most other parts of the world as well. Coal is the most polluting of all fossil fuels, and 80% of China’s electricity needs are met by burning coal. Policymakers both inside and outside of China are looking for ways to minimize the need for new Chinese coal plants as the country’s economy expands. An eventual plan for reducing China’s carbon footprint will almost certainly have to focus on reducing coal use, and making remaining coal plants more efficient.
