Until 2009 China was a net exporter of coal; they produced more than they consumed (production in 2009 = 3.36 billion tons, consumption = 3.08 billion tons). Now as an importer, it is still relatively small amounts that they import; they recently did a deal with Australia to import 30 million tons a year – the article calls that “huge” but it is less than 1% of China’s coal consumption.
