Hounds in general date back to 1000BC, mainly from Mediterranean countries. The bloodhound, however, is traced back to 7th Century France. St. Hubert, a French monk, is thought to have crossed a black hound with 2 different strains of white hounds to end up with the bloodhound variety.
The name bloodhound is thought to have come from the way the dogs were bred in the medieval times, through the careful use of prue blood stock.
