In the southern United States there are a number of “gator farms” which harvest alligators specifically for consumption. Since alligators were protected as a threatened species until 1999, alligator farming is a relatively new industry. Furthermore, due to the limited demand for alligator meat, the industry is relatively small–only about 3-6 million dollars per year. Most alligator farms slaughter alligators for leather and fabric as well as for meat.
