Opal is abundant in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Ethiopia.
Opals are a combination of silica and water. Nearly 95 percent of all opals come from Australian deserts. The other five percent come from Mexico, northern Brazil, Idaho, and Nevada, and recently, people have found opals in Ethiopia and Mali as well. In order to retrieve the opals, people mine them.
