Actually, this is one of the biggest problems with Urban development. Often, tract housing soil is drawn from nearby wetlands and other natural local features, situated in areas that would make for poor housing. The problem is, the loss of these wetlands results in environmental hazards such as increased flooding, erosion, and increased mosquitos. The soil certianly does not come for free, and companies will often take it without regard for the daamge it causes in the long term.
