Where do squirrels go during the winter?

Squirrels, like all mammals have the need to maintain body temperature during all seasons.  Unlike some mammals, they neither migrate, or hibernate.  So essentially, squirrels don’t go anywhere.  During the winter they burrow into trees and make their nests inside them.  They also have no problem with building their nest in an opening in a roof or barn.
