Poinsettias are native to Mexico and prefer tropical climates. There are also now wild poinsettias growing in warm climates such as California, Texas and Florida. They are named after the first US Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett who brought back the first cuttings from his travels to Mexico. California is now the top poinsettias producer, although they are grown commercially in all states.

As well as Mexico, the poinsettia flower is native to Guatemala.
