Animals have very keen instincts and can often find new sources of food and water during periods of drought. Generally, their paths are guided merely by finding and following traces of live grass and water. These animals often travel in herds, and the danger occurs when some animals get injured, become weak, and stay behind or stray from the crowd and eventually become lost. During prolonged periods of drought, animals that cannot find new sources of food and water will ultimately perish despite their efforts to travel hundreds of miles without nourishment.
