Orchids are most commonly found in areas that are high in humidity (like rainforests). The plants grow in wooded areas that have access to plenty of sunlight. Wooded hillsides are one of the orchid’s favorite spots to flourish. There are some species of orchids that are indigenous to North America.
Wild orchids can be found in such a wide variety of locations because there are so many different types of orchids. There are currently over 20,000 accepted species of orchids.
Orchids grow on every continent except Antarctica. They are commonly found in tropical countries. Ecuador alone boasts over 4,000 species, some growing on other plants and others growing on rocks. In fact, outside orchid museums can be found in cities like Mindo – I visited one, and it was wonderful!
