Orangutangs live primarily in the forests of southeast Asia. They are listed as an endangered species and can often be found in various zoos across the world.
The main areas where orangutans live are in the countries of Borneo and Sumatra which is the name of the two different species used to identify them with. Sumatran Orangutans inhabit northern Sumatra in isolated forests north of Lake Toba. Bornean Orangutans have a greater distribution, with two different subspecies of orangutan classified within the country. Central Bornean orangutans inhabit areas around Sebangau, Mawas and Gunung Palung. Northeast Bornean orangutans inhabit areas around Kinabtangan and Gunung Gajah.
