Dates grow on date palm trees (phoenix dactylifera). Dates most likely originated around the Persian Gulf. The top ten countries that produce dates are:
1. Egypt2. Iran3. Saudi Arabia4. United Arab Emirates5. Pakistan6. Algeria7. Iraq8. Sudan9. Oman10. Libya
Dates grow on True Date Palm Trees, which can grow up to 20 feet tall and be 2 feet wide. If the palm is pruned to have only one trunk (it is a suckering palm and if left to grow naturally will have many suckers that grow at its base), it can grow as tall as 100 feet. The dates themselves are a yellow, orange, or red fruit with a sweet flesh around a seed. The True Date Palm is often used in landscaping, especially along boulevards in the United States.
