Birds tend to sleep in the area of their nest. Some will sleep in the nest, especially during breeding season and when they are incubating their eggs. Others will sleep on branches or in holes in the tree or plant (some owls). Others will sleep on the ground in the vegetation (grouse, etc.).
During storms I have seen birds huddling under the eaves of the house or on windowsills where they can enjoy the waste heat from the house.
