The origin of fried green tomatoes, like many foods, is unclear. It is defiantly a southern US tradition. Thomas Jefferson grew them in the 1780s and credited one of his neighbors with the introduction. The first recorded recipe is credited to Harriott Pinckney Horry with “To Keep Tomatoes For Winter Use” in 1770. However, some suggest that the dish is native to Mexico and Central America.
