In the eighteenth century, a series of inventions transofrmed the manufacture of cotton in England, giving rise to the industrial revolution. During this time there was a population explosion and England faced increasing pressure to produce more manufactured goods. To meet the increasing demand, England had to import nearly 3/4 of its cotton from the American South.
