The origin of the bird flu (avian influenza) is still a mystery today, but the first identified case was in Italy in 1878 and was thought to be a serious disease from chickens. The H5N1 strain of the virus was first documented case was in Hong Kong in 1997 causing severe respiratory problems in 18 humans, 6 of them died. Another outbreak of the H5N1 virus occurred in Hong Kong in 2003, killing only one person this time.
Although these are a few of the places the bird flu has been prominent in, the origins are still undetected.
