Making and maintaining a backyard pond entails a few steps. First, digg a hole with steps in the side. Then pack down the soil. Then get some old crapeting and lay it in the hole to protect the liner from rocks. Then get a rubber pond liner from a plant nursery. Add rocks along the edge to hold down and disguise the liner. Then you will want to add a biological filter to prevent bacterial stagnation, and a UV filter to prevent algae. You will also need to intall some type of bubbler or waterfall to circulate the water for fish. If you are looking for a small pond you may just want to buy a preformed plastic or fiberglass pond
