The Yucca Mountain waste repository plan was scrapped when the Department of Energy withdrew its proposal for the construction of the site after Obama took office. Recently, however, two states brought a claim against the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, stating that they are violating the terms of the piece of legislation that called for the development of the site at Yucca Mountain.
The Department of Energy maintains a facility called the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, located in the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico. It is a geological repository suited for the purpose of hazardous waste disposal. The majority of the waste materials at the site are radioactive materials used in the research and production of nuclear weapons.
