The tropical fruit is originally from southern Brazil and Paraguay, but was spread north through South and Central America by Indians. Columbus discovered pineapple on his travels, and brought it back with him to Spain in 1493. It was then used as a protection against scurvy on sailing ships, and wasn’t brought to Hawaii and the Philippines until the early 1500’s.
