Where are coconut palms native to?

The exact place of origin of the coconut palm is not known. Several locations compete for the title, including South Asia (India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka), northwestern South America, and New Zealand. It is very widespread in the tropics due to both natural an artificial reasons: merchants and travelers could carry it with them, and the fruit itself is evolved to take advantage of marine currents.
