Maize was domesticated by indigenous people in Mesoamerica sometime between 7500 and 12000 years ago. The exact origination spot is unclear, but appears to be somewhere in Mexico.
According to archaeological findings, the earliest domesticated maize cobs were found in Guerrero, Mexico between about 4280-4210 BCE. Maize was derived from the plant teosinte in Central America as early as 9,000 years ago according to the link posted below..
