Where and when was cotton domesticated?

Cotton domestication occurred at various times throughout ancient history.  Scientists have found pieces of cotton cloth from ancient Mexican socieities that date back 7,000 years.  3,000 years ago both the ancient Egyptians and the inhabitants of the Indus River Valley (now Pakistan) were spinning cotton and using it for clothing and other purposes.  Arab merchants first brought cotton to Europeans around 800 AD.  Cotton has a long history, but it is unclear where and when it was exactly first put to wide use.
