The newest generation is expected to be released in 2012. The vehicle should be out during the first half of the year and will initially only be released in California.
The Rav 4 EV was actually produced between 1997 and 2003. The car was only leased to a limited number of citizens of California and subsequently sold when Toyota discontinued manufacturing of the car. However, beginning early in 2012, Toyota will restart production of the Rav 4 EV, but the car will initially only be available in California; though Toyota hopes to expand to nationwide availability.
As andyyeah pointed out, the Rav 4 EV was produced between 1997 and 2003 along with several other electric cars. If you are interested in learning more about the history of electric cars, I highly recommend watching “Who Killed The Electric Car.” It is a very entertaining and enlightening documentary. You can order it on DVD or watch it on YouTube (it is in English even though it has Greek subtitles).
