On July 1, 2010, India put into effect the Clean Energy Cess coal tax on coal producers. India has vast reserves of coal and uses coal to generate over half of its energy, but coal is also the dirtiest fossil fuel, and India’s population is expanding and its nation is industrializing; thus, more energy is needed to sustain this growth. The money generated from the tax will go into a clean energy fund.
