They were both first identified by fishermen in the 16th century. They were then documented and patterned starting in the 1920s. Some great information check this out:
They’ve been identified for hundreds of years, when fisherman first realized the differences in weather patterns. No one knows for sure when they were named, only that the names reflected the ‘personalities’ of the weather patterns.
