According to the site below, the earliest record we have of a sighting of the aurora borealis is from 2600 BC in China, which is a written description of the phenomenon.
The Northern Lights would have been known far back in prehistory, as early as you want to consider humans to be humans. And of course they existed for hundreds of millions of years before that.
