The Salton Sea was created in 1905. Flooding from the Colorado River broke through an irrigation canal, which allowed the water to flow into the Salton Basin. The Salton Sea continues to be replenished by agricultural flows from surrounding valleys.
A lake of some sort has been where the Salton Sea is now far longer than since 1905. Millions of years longer. It comes and goes… the 1905 date reflects the most recent flooding. You should not think of the Salton Sea as something brand new in 1905, however.
