As early as 500-400 BC, philosophers and astronomers were theorizing that the Milky Way (as viewed from Earth) might be a collection of distant stars.
Actual proof came in 1610 when Galileo used a telescope to observe that the Milky Way was “a huge number of faint stars.” These observations were the beginning of the collaborative scientific effort to define and “discover” the Milky Way
