I could be wrong, but I did some looking around, and did not find anything that says that a nuclear bomb has been dropped. Many people incorrectly believe that the bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear bombs, but they were actually atomic bombs.
Nuclear weapons have been in the news a lot lately. There is a fear that countries in the Middle East and in Asia have been developing nuclear weapons of mass destruction.
Actually, atomic bombs are nuclear bombs. Nuclear weapons can be roughly grouped into two different categories, delineated by the nature of each’s energy-creating reaction. The first group encompasses fission weapons, so named because their immense energy is generated by the splitting of atomic nuclei into smaller, relatively equal, masses (often two smaller parts). Atomic bombs are fission weapons. (The second group includes fusion weapons, in which atoms of hydrogen are fused together, forming a helium nuclei.)
The last time a nuclear weapon was used in warfare was August 9th, 1945, when the US dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. However, nuclear weapons have since been detonated in tests by many different countries, one recent example being North Korea’s weapons tests in May of 2009.
