When was the last coal power plant built in America?

Despite the perception that coal powered plants can be hazardous and a large producer of greenhouse gases, many more plants are being built and brought online. Every year new plants open allowing for a cheaper production of electricity. Between July 2010 and July 2012 two plants were brought online, less than the projected 4 plants for that year. By the end of 2013 capacity is predicted to rise by 5,500 MW. With another 10,000 MW by 2017. The addition of this power will come from both new plant construction and by adding capacity to existing facilities.
