Lester Allan Pelton is known as the inventor of hydro-electric power due to his invention of a free-jet water turbine in the 1870s which made the use of water as an energy source possible.

i am not entirely sure If this was the first hydro power but I know it was used.

around 1500 bc (during the metal age) water was harnased in a water wheel. on the other side of the water wheel a large, heavy hammer that was resting on a lever. the water wheel would hit the end of the hammer causing the side with the head to go up and when the water wheel let go the hammer came down with tremendous force. this was used for metal casting
