The X-1 was developed for the US government by the Bell Aircraft company in 1947, and was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier.  It was also the first rocket powered aircraft, developed to investigate our relationship with the sound barrier.  Chuck Yeager was officially the first pilot to break the sound barrier.
