The first successful heart transplant occurred in Cape Town, South Africa on December 3, 1967. The surgeon Christiaan Barnard transplanted the heart of Denise Darvall (a 25-year-old bank clerk), into Louis Washkansky (a 53-year-old grocer). Washkansky only survived for 18 days after the surgery, but at least his body did not reject the heart.
