The London Underground was the first railway system. Conceived by Charles Pearson, excavation for the underground tunnel began in 1860, it was completed in 1862, carrying its first passengers on January 10th 1863. 30,000 passengers were transported on this first day of underground railway operation. This first tunnel was host to trains which still ran on steam power, in 1905 they made the switch to electrified rails.
