Seedless watermelons have their origin in Japan, where genetic engineers produced the first seedless watermelon about 50 years ago. The fruit is obtained by treating the seeds of traditional seeded watermelon with a chemical called colchicine, which produces a triploid seed. These seed are sterile and hence the fruit has no seeds.
