The first expedition to climb Mt. McKinley in Alaska was by James Wickersham, a judge who incidentally had been appointed to the Alaska bench by President William McKinley for whom the mountain is named. He tried to make the summit in 1903 but failed. The first successful expedition to summit was that of Hudson Stuck who led his team to the top in 1913. Walter Harper, a member of that expedition, is recorded as the first man to have reached the top.
