When was the first DOE loan given out to renewable energy?

    In 1981, the Department of Energy approved a loan to D Small and Sons, Inc. – a New England firm – for a renewable fuels project.  The total cost of the ethanol plant in Auburn had a proposed cost of 128 million dollars, and the loan covered part of it.
