Questions about how bodies of matter move go back to Ancient Greece. For centuries scientists such as Ptolemy, Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo all searched for answers to how our planet and surrounding planets moved in relation to the sun, or in earlier theories, how the sun and other planets moved in relation to Earth. The term “gravity” was first introduced in 1686 by Isaac Newton in his book Philosophie Naturalis Principia Mathematica, where he stated, “It is now established that this force is gravity, and therefore we shall call it gravity from now on.”
