When was bacteria first observed?

    Probably September 17th, 1683.  Anton Van Leeuwenhoek first described what he called “animalcules” by looking at tooth plaque on a microscope he built….gross but cool.  He is credited with making all sorts of discoveries, and sometimes credited with inventing the microscope, although others before him made the first models.
