The sun is expected to begin dying at some point 5 billion years away from now. It will follow the path from a planetary nebula to a white dwarf to a black dwarf — the final stage here, the sun will essentially be a dead star.

In about five billion years, the sun will swell into a red giant and engulf the Earth — long before that (a few million years), it will be hot enough that most life will not be able to habitate earth. In a strict sense, the sun will never “die” — the matter will be recycled.
